GETTING OLD, only one of the worst things
One of the worst things about getting old, and there rather many to choose from, is the lack of hugs and kisses. I guess the number of people who may hug and kiss you falls away. They often die on you, and you shake your head. Then, some just can not come that close to your very real fading of the light. Others just forget because it is not a part of their routine.
Younger people think you do not want to be bothered. Older people just do not have it in them anymore. Something happens on the latter part of the journey, and hugs and kisses just gradually drop off in number. The hunger in you, however, is just as needy as it was at age five or fifteen or thirty or whatever.
Visit a warehouse for the old in America, charitably called “nursing homes,” and see room after room of old people lined up, bed after bed, yearning for a hug and a kiss. Some are so angry and thus cranky that they themselves will say it does not matter anymore. But it does.
It really does.
